Annual Dinner 17th April 2020

Old Alts Annual Dinner Friday 17th April 2020 – Old friends, New Format – Book now
Blanchflower

Join the Head & Old Friends in a New Format, New Venue for our 2020 Annual Dinner.

I am delighted to finally reveal the details of the 2020 Old Altrinchamians Annual Dinner and it’s safe to say it’s going to be a bit different!

After discussion with many Old Alts, we’ve gone for a more casual event this year, to be held at Blanchflower on Shaws Road, Altrincham (opposite the renovated and very popular Altrincham Market). It’s a relatively new and highly commended establishment, with a capacity of only 70 diners so tickets this year are very much limited and we expect to sell out fast based on the initial interest.

You’ll remember that the school is around a mile away, (a short dash, or a leisurely stroll, depending on whether you attended school when lunch time trips to Alty were allowed or not!), so for those who enjoy a pre-dinner tour of the School, they will be doing tours at 3pm on the same day, so please contact the School if you’re interested.

Anyone wanting to meet up beforehand to chat with old friends over a pint have plenty of options available.

Within this fresh approach, there’s still plenty of room for important association traditions – the Head Master will be in attendance to share the latest school news, the raffle will entertain and reward once again, we’ll light candles to remember those Old Alts who have since passed and most importantly, friends old and new from AGSB will be with you to share the experience.

Here are the finer details:

Peter Fallows

66995EEE-C2A8-464C-8409-0B0FAD0169EFWe’ve been notified that former teacher and old boy Peter Fallows died at his home in Dunham Massey on Christmas Eve after a long illness. Our thoughts are with his family.
We understand that the funeral is Friday 17th January 12.45 at Altrincham Crematorium and then on to the Stamford arms at 2 pm.

Messenger Newspapers announcement:

As a tribute, we publish the retirement note from the 1996 Newsletter;

Retirement of Peter Fallows

Pete first entered this school in 1955 as a bright-eyed eleven-year-old. He soon came under the influence of George Thornton and occasionally, to his cost, Keith Nodding. After leaving school he went into industry where he learnt his engineering skills, but eventually he decided to change his career and go into teaching.
In 1971 he returned to the school where he has taught his considerable skills to many generations of young men for the past twenty-five years. He is justly proud of his students’ excellent exam successes and Pete could always handle the most difficult pupils, who regularly come to visit him years after leaving.
A dynamic member of the staff football and cricket teams, Pete will be a great loss to the school. We wish him and Lynne many happy years of retirement.

Geoff Mike Gittins

IMG_0380a

It is with great sadness that we have learned of the death of Mike (AKA Geoff) Gittins on Monday 6th January aged 81. Sadly, Mike had been suffering from severe dementia for several months and was having mobility difficulties. He was admitted to Wythenshawe Hospital in early December with pneumonia and also with an infection in his bad knee.

He was at School from 1950 to 56.
Mike was a member of the Old Alts Committee for many years, and was Chairman from 2001 until he stood down in 2012 on the death of his wife.
He was a keen golfer and organised OAA golf events over a long period.
Mike also enjoyed cricket and after he stopped playing, he continued to be an officer of Hale Barns Cricket Club, rising to the position of President and Life Member.
In his younger days he was a very active footballer.

We send our condolences to Pat and his family.

Aussie Bush Fires

Just received this email from classmate Stephen Jennings, regarding the Aussie bush fires;

Thanks for your good wishes. I am living in Perth now so am well away from the terrible Eastern States fires. There have been fires to the north and south of Perth but all under control now. I am a little concerned about a bush block I have in Porongurup and plan to get down there soon to check the fire breaks. No house there however. Food supplies coming by truck to W.A. from the east across the Nullabor are currently blocked due to fires which will start to affect our prices. So far the main impact on me has been non-delivery of my Guardian Weekly from the Sydney printers!
