LATEST EVENTS FOR THE OLDALTS
The saville laver dinner
Saville Laver

The Society setup in 1998 in honour of the School's founder and first headmaster, Laurence Saville Laver, held its annual dinner recently.
The Saville Laver Society event was held at St John’s College, Cambridge, where Laurence was a student at the turn of the 20th century.
The dinner saw more than 40 current Oxbridge students, Old Boys, teachers and old friends of the school come together in the Great Hall, St John’s College.
Laurence was 32 when he became headmaster. He died three months before the School's 21st birthday.

Football
Old Alts FC
are looking for players for the coming season.

The club runs five open age Saturday teams from Crossford Bridge in Sale and training will commence next month.

Alts are also looking for a coach to work with their first team who play in the Premier Division of the Manchester Football League

For further details contact Phil Lewis on 07753 137170.

Old Altrinchamians’ Amateur Football Club 2010/11

The Old Alts AFC fields five teams in open age football every Saturday. Players of all abilities are welcome and we are always looking for people to help out in supporting roles. We have excellent facilities at Crossford Bridge, where we work closely with our partners, Sale Harriers and Sale United, in the Crossford Bridge Management Association.

The last two seasons have been amongst the most successful in the Club’s history. In fact in 2009/10 by finishing third the first XI achieved its highest ever position in the Manchester Premier League. By comparison the 2010/11 season has been somewhat disappointing. This seems strange to say when for only the second time in the Club’s history, the 1st XI reached the final of the Cheshire Amateur Cup. However, unlike in 1975 when Alts won this prestigious trophy, the team went down narrowly 2-1 to Ashville from the West Cheshire League. The final was played at Rochdale Linnets FC and we were tremendously encouraged by the large number of supporters who turned up on the night. They witnessed some good football from both teams and when Alts drew level at 1-1, it looked as though victory could be achieved.

What was disappointing for he 1st XI was their inexplicable loss of league form, which occurred from mid season onwards. Of the first eleven league matches eight were won and two drawn. We then lost 12 of our next 17 league games and expect now to finish 10th out of 16 teams. Nevertheless great credit goes to our manager, Lee Bennett and his assistant, Andy Maclean for their leadership and achieving such a successful cup run.

The 2nd XI manager, Pat Kelly, in his second season with the Club, has continued to make steady improvements. The team has consolidated its position in the second division of the Manchester League finishing in 10th place, after narrowly avoiding relegation last season. They also managed to make further progress in the Stockport Senior Cup, this season by reaching the semi final, where they met local rivals, Stockport Georgians. After going 3-0 down, the Reserves battled back to 3-3 in the 2nd half only to go down to virtually the last kick of the match.

Once again we had to appoint a new manager to our Altrincham League side, which had been so successful over the past two seasons. So much so that the former manager wanted to try operating independently and took almost the whole squad with him. So great credit goes to Simon Kluj who faced the enormous task of building a new team almost from scratch. This was not an easy mission and by Christmas the side had only managed to garner 2 points and had to wait until the 26th February to achieve their first victory. However with two victories in their last two games, Simon was voted manager of the month for April and can now look forward to next season with renewed confidence.

Our other two ‘social’ teams continue to play in the East Cheshire League and both managed to improve on last year’s performances. Credit should be given to Norman Crowther, Darren Hill, Colin Adams and John O’Conner who combined forces to breath new life into the Youth team, rebranded as Old Alts East. Equally deserved thanks are due to Martin Officer, who this year was ably assisted by Dave Holden in running the A team, which has again showed great team spirit and has also enjoyed improved results as the season has drawn to a close.

Once again we enjoyed our Annual Sportsman’s Dinner at the Cresta Court Hotel in November when we were entertained by Fred Eyre and the comedian, Johnnie Casson. This annual event will take place again this year on Thursday 24th November 2011 and anyone reading this report will be most welcome to attend. Please ring me on 0161 428 9836 for tickets.

The Club is now 91 years old and with the help of Ian Crosby, I am hoping to compile the history of Old Alts AFC in time for our centenary in 2020. If anyone has any interesting pictures, match reports or memorabilia, I would be delighted to hear from you on the same number as above.

Brian Clark (1954-62) - 0161 428 9836.

Cricket
Ashley Cricket Club (incorporating Old Altrinchamians CC) 2011/12

Ashley Cricket Club is all set for the 2012 season with a record 11 teams wearing the club colours and it will be the 26th since Old Altrinchamians CC were incorporated within the club.

At the recent Annual General Meeting several club trophies were named after ex-Ashley and ex-Old Alts players. Firstly Peter Morton (1939-1945) has kindly agreed to have the 1st XI batting award named after him. The Astorga brothers attended the school in the 30’s/40’s, Tom was there the same time as Peter Morton and his older brother Tom was a pupil from 1932-1938. They both originally played for Ashley before helping to set up the Old Alts CC in 1954.

From 2012 the The Bill and Tom Astorga Trophy will be awarded to the two batsmen who feature in the best partnership in senior cricket. Bill and Tom were team-mates of John Allott, who already has the 2nd XI player of the year trophy named after him.

Other Old Boys still involved on the playing side are Ian Horn, Chris Pendlebury, John Ward, Dave Rice, who is the club chairman and more recent pupils, Josh and Matt Wardle and Rish Agrawal.

Back to the 2011 season, the club reached the semi final of the Cheshire Shield before losing to Poynton CC. The senior teams all maintained their league positions and are looking to improve for next year and beyond. We are actively recruiting players for all our teams. In 2012 we will have 3 Saturday sides and 2 Sunday sides plus 5 junior teams from Under 9 to Under 15. A new initiative for 2012 is “Little League Cricket” where we hope to provide coaching for younger players, aged 5, 6 and 7 to prepare them for Under 9s cricket.

A 90-page yearbook is now produced to record the successes of the club and contains league tables, averages and all the trophy winners at the club. It also contains a dozen pages of club history. The club is keen to re-connect with any past players and would love to hear from anyone who has any photos, scorecards, scorebooks, match reports or any general memories about playing for either Ashley or Old Alts Cricket Clubs.

If anyone would like a copy of the yearbook or would like to offer any content please contact the Secretary, Brian Birtles (07766 114447) or bdbirtles@hotmail.com

Golf
OLD ALTS GOLF SOCIETY

The 22nd Annual Old Alts Society Day took place held at Ringway Golf Club on Thursday 27th October 2011

winners

Prize winners Declan and Scott

Society Day was not blessed with the good weather that we have grown used to in recent years, but that didn’t appear to dampen the competitive spirit. Scott Meakin won the Charles Laver Trophy with 40 points and guest Declan Danagher won the Bob Dickson Trophy with 34 points. Another golfer was presented with an ancient wooden club for managing only 10 points, but we'll spare his blushes! Once again the half-way house cakes were delicious, and one of my team observed that they served to put many yards on my shots on the back nine! Thanks go to Peter Morton for his after dinner jokes.

Scott announced the AGSB Centenary Golf Day which would be held on Thursday 28th June at Chorlton-cum-Hardy Golf Club. Details from him at School.

The section has grown over the last two years but new members are always welcome. These events are a pleasant way to renew old school friendships in convivial surroundings.

Any Old Altrinchamian wanting more information or better still to take part in any or all of these fixtures, speak to Paul.
